Omaha's Old Market and Midtown communities have long been home to a diverse tapestry of individuals, including those within our at-risk and homeless populations. Among them were memorable figures like Eric "Grimm" Hillesland and Daniel "Lurch" Gerlich, individuals who defied stereotypes and demonstrated the resilience and hard work that can emerge from unexpected places. Their stories remind us of the untapped potential within a population too often overlooked or deemed invisible by society.
This article seeks to foster understanding and build a bridge between the storekeepers of downtown Omaha and those among the homeless population who are earnestly seeking opportunities. It’s important to recognize that homelessness, in and of itself, is not an indicator of criminal activity. Instead, its root causes often lie in personal desperation or, at times, a lack of moral guidance—circumstances that do not define the character or potential of an individual.
For storeowners with vacancies to fill, offering an opportunity to someone from this population could create mutual benefits. A dedicated employee, once given a chance, can prove to be a loyal and hardworking contributor, while the business owner has the satisfaction of helping uplift another person’s life. At the same time, criminal activity—whether from those experiencing homelessness or others—must never be condoned. Respect for both parties is essential in fostering trust and growth in our community.
The opportunities, though sometimes appearing out of reach, do exist on all sides. A potential employee deemed a "nuisance" by some may simply need the chance to demonstrate their worth. Likewise, shopkeepers have the unique ability to turn despair into hope with a simple act of kindness and inclusion. By bridging this gap, we can foster a community where integrity and respect guide interactions, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
I got my start as both a writer and a tech enthusiast in downtown Omaha, frequenting local coffee shops and the W. Dale Clark library (now replaced by the new Mutual of Omaha tower and streetcar project). These resources provided the tools I needed to build skills and create opportunities for myself. In my journey, I’ve also sought to advocate for Omaha’s homeless population, particularly when poor behavior among some individuals cast a shadow on the many who strive for better lives.
To those who assume all homeless individuals are inherently troublesome, consider this: residency, or lack thereof, does not determine one’s moral compass or likelihood of engaging in criminal activity. The true measure lies in an individual’s human decency, empathy, and moral foundation—qualities that transcend socioeconomic status or living conditions. By fostering mutual respect and understanding, we can create a community where opportunities abound for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
